Village Earthworks has emerged as a shining example of success in the construction industry, thanks to its blended approach of diverse equipment and extensive experience. Founded by Simon Martin and Reuben Musselman in 2021, the company, based in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, has rapidly grown by combining complementary skills and a strategic fleet expansion.
From Vision to Reality
Martin and Musselman, who have been friends since high school, embarked on different career paths after graduation. Musselman, a third-generation excavator, spent 15 years in his family’s business, while Martin pursued a career in civil engineering, working across Canada for some of the nation’s largest construction firms. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the duo saw an opportunity to merge their experiences and skills to create their own company.
“Simon and I bring very complementary skills to the table,” Musselman shared. “While I handle more of the operations now, Simon’s hands-on approach in the office ensures we stay connected to our work.”
A Fleet Built for Success
As Village Earthworks grew, so did its equipment fleet. In 2024, the company invested in a trio of new machines: a Liebherr PR 716 G8 dozer, a Liebherr 920 compact excavator, and a Komatsu WA270 wheel loader. This addition has significantly expanded their capabilities, enabling them to take on larger and more diverse projects.
Musselman emphasized the importance of selecting equipment that aligns with the company’s needs and preferences. “When purchasing machinery, it’s about the quality of the equipment, the cost, and whether you actually enjoy operating it,” he said.
The new additions reflect Village Earthworks’ philosophy of ownership and care. “Buying equipment is a big investment,” Musselman explained. “You need to take care of it, maintain it, and ensure it’s a reliable source of income.”
The Right Machines for the Job
The purchase of the Liebherr 920 compact excavator was driven by the company’s need for a machine that could excel in tight urban job sites while still delivering significant power. “The 920 is a game-changer,” Musselman said. “It combines impressive volume, power, and reach with the compactness needed for in-town work.”
The Liebherr PR 716 G8 dozer, meanwhile, has quickly become a favorite among the crew for its power and smooth operation. “It’s like we bought two dozers in one,” Musselman remarked. “The blade capability alone has been a huge asset.”
The Komatsu WA270 wheel loader was chosen for its versatility, helping the company tackle a wide range of projects, including snow removal and infrastructure work.
A Diverse Portfolio of Projects
Village Earthworks’ diverse fleet has enabled the company to serve a variety of industries, including ICI (in-building), infrastructure, housing, and commercial construction. This versatility has attracted a loyal client base and positioned the company for continued growth.
“Our team is fortunate to be working in an area that offers so much opportunity,” Musselman said. “We’re passionate about delivering high-quality work and building strong relationships with our clients.”
Conclusion
Village Earthworks’ success story is a testament to the power of partnership, strategic fleet management, and a commitment to excellence. With a growing team of nine employees and a diverse portfolio of projects, the company is poised for even greater achievements in the years to come.
